CARACTERÍSTICAS Y PERSPECTIVAS DE USO González Rodríguez, Esther María Tuff potassium source organic-mineral fertilizers Tobas fertilizante orgánico – mineral fuente de potasio Associated to Chirino Formation, from the Cretaceous Volcanic Arc, there are several tuff deposits bearing significant contents of potassium (K2O> 1.32%) and exchangeable cations. Such tuffs were evaluated in order to define their mineralogical and petrographic characteristics, and the relationship to the tectonic and hydrothermal alterations (both the tuffs themselves, and the surrounding rocky complexes, in which the existence of mineral and medicinal waters is characteristic). The presence of potassium allowed mapping by radiometry. Thus, it was possible to specify values in the potassium channel featuring them. Also, this research aims to establish a pattern of geological, geophysical, hydrographic and relief aspects for those areas where this lithology is located, and its extrapolation to other regions with similar geological characteristics. According to the chemical composition, representative samples taken were tested as natural sources of potassium for fertilizers, with positive results.  Asociados a la Formación Chirino, del Arco Volcánico del Cretácico, existen varios depósitos de tobas con notables contenidos de potasio (K2O > 1,32 %) y de cationes de potasio intercambiables. Estas tobas se evaluaron con el fin de definir sus características mineralógicas y petrográficas, así como la relación con alteraciones hidrotermales y tectónicas (tanto de las tobas, propiamente dichas, como de los complejos rocosos circundantes, donde también es característica la existencia de aguas minero-medicinales). La presencia de potasio permitió el mapeo por radiometría. Así, se logró precisar los valores en el canal de potasio que las caracterizan. Asimismo, esta investigación está encaminada a establecer un patrón de los aspectos geológicos, geofísicos, hidrográficos y del relieve de las zonas donde se localiza esta litología y su extrapolación hacia otras regiones con características geológicas similares. Según la composición química, se tomaron muestras representativas sometidas a ensayo como fuentes de potasio en fertilizantes naturales, con resultados positivos.
