In this context, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria have become a crucial reference framework to promote the sustainability of the sector. Cuba, with a developing mining industry and a strong commitment to sustainability, has growing government interest in sustainable mining and potential to attract responsible foreign investment with opportunities for technological innovation to improve efficiency with reduced environmental impact. The challenges and opportunities that the incorporation or not of ESG criteria in their operations and business strategies mean for mining companies in Cuba and how the Cuban economic model and its regulatory framework influence their adoption are examined. Carrying out this work contributes to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities for the implementation of ESG criteria in Cuban mining and to the identification of best practices and recommendations to strengthen the sustainability of the Cuban mining sector, concluding that, although Cuban mining faces significant challenges in ESG terms, there are also important opportunities to move towards a more sustainable model. La industria minera, a pesar de su importancia económica, enfrenta crecientes presiones para minimizar su impacto ambiental y social. En este contexto, los criterios ESG (Ambientales, Sociales y de Gobernanza) se han convertido en un marco de referencia crucial para impulsar la sostenibilidad del sector. Cuba, con una industria minera en desarrollo y un fuerte compromiso con la sostenibilidad, posee un creciente interés del gobierno en la minería sostenible y un potencial para atraer inversión extranjera responsable con oportunidades de innovación tecnológica para mejorar la eficiencia con reducción del impacto ambiental. Se examinan retos y oportunidades que significan para las empresas mineras en Cuba la incorporación o no de los criterios ESG en sus operaciones y estrategias de negocios y cómo influencia del modelo económico cubano y su marco regulatorio en la adopción de los mismos. Con la realización de este trabajo se contribuye a un mejor entendimiento de los desafíos y oportunidades para la implementación de los criterios ESG en la minería cubana y a la identificación de mejores prácticas y recomendaciones para fortalecer la sostenibilidad del sector minero cubano, concluyendo que, si bien la minería cubana enfrenta desafíos significativos en términos ESG, también existen importantes oportunidades para avanzar hacia un modelo más sostenible.
