Abstract

In the present investigation, a petrological and mineralogical characterization of tourmalines was carried out in Lela and Las Nuevas mineralized areas, belonging to Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality, from which it was possible to identify two main types of tourmalines from morphological point of view: tabular, subidiomorphic - anhedral (Las Nuevas) and acicular-prismatic (Lela), with a variable pleocroism that responds more or less to variations in the chemical composition of crystals. For their study, microscopy techniques in transmitted light and mineral optics were used. This still incipient study will provide mineralogical criteria that will contribute to knowledge about the evolution of magmatic and hydrothermal processes, which are responsible for ore formation, and will allow to propose possible sources of fluids.
