Abstract

In the present work, the results reached in the study of the Cuban natural zeolite of the "Tasajeras" deposit as an additive in obtaining paintings of fungicidal character are exposed. This material was exchanged with zinc divalent cations (Zn) and was used in the formulation of a vinyl paint with the aim of being applied in environments that require a high degree of hygiene such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, laboratories, etc. The microbiological tests of sterility, fungicidal activity against several microorganisms that develop on the wall were performed on the obtained paint; it was also evaluated from the physico-mechanical point of view to study its properties. Finally, tests were conducted on the use of fungicide paint on a masonry wall exposed to the exterior, to evaluate the resistance of the paint to deterioration by microorganisms for a period of one year. The results indicated that zinc-modified zeolite can be used as an additive in the formulation of fungicidal paints, in doses of 3% by weight for a Zn concentration of 1.2 g/L. As a result, it is possible to obtain a water-based paint that is more environmentally friendly, since it is possible to replace the commercial biocides currently used and which present high toxicity in handling.
