Quality improvements of the bentonite from the "Managua" deposit to boost its production

Abstract

Bentonite is a clay with multiple uses. It is in wide demand worldwide. Calcium bentonite is very useful, but it is its sodium form that is the most stable; therefore, in this study the improvements for its quality are presented with the aim of increasing its production and demand. The UEB “Gustavo Machín” plant produces bentonite in its two variants. Currently, the quality of the natrified bentonite obtained at the facility is not adequate, due to the way in which it is natrified and the fact that there is no rigid control of the drying temperature in the oven. In previous works, the results were studied at 120, 140, 160, 180 and 200oC, with solid and dissolved carbonate. In the investigation the temperature is optimized, the effect of this variable and the form of addition of the diluted sodium carbonate in the properties of the natrified bentonite are evaluated. The results indicated, in general, that at values close to 140 - 150ºC, with sodium carbonate added in diluted form, high values of swellability, colloidal degree and Westinghouse water absorption are achieved.
