Abstract

Traquitic rocks in the central volcano-plutonic fringe of Camaguey province Cretaceous- arc were studied. Results from chemical composition, pedestrian radiometry and geological features showed validity to delimitate potential areas to undertake further prospection and exploitation. The five geological formations with prospective of up to 9.32% of potassium — Camujiro, Guaimaro, La Sierra, Marti, and Piragua (the latter highly prone to tuffs) were determined. Main K-bearing minerals with higher percentages in <0.2 mm fraction were orthose, sericite, and biotite. This proved that K sources come from both primary minerals and altered minerals. The latter occurring in areas nearby the granitoid intrusion. The general results and the use tests in plant pots proved the validity and presence in Cuba of a new type of raw material very useful for diverse uses.
