Abstract

Effluents from the process of extracting gold from cyanide not only contain free cyanide but also contain soluble cyanide complex form with different metals. These complexes do not have the same stability and therefore their toxicity and clearance in each of the cases is not the same. This fact makes the treatment of effluent cyanide process is a very complex process and the conditions found to effectively treat effluent are not necessarily the same that could be applied in other effluent. The objective of this paper is a comparative study of the application of treatment techniques for the removal of cyanide and toxic metals in cyanide effluents from two gold ores. The treatment methods used were the sodium hypochlorite oxidation and chemical precipitation with iron salt. An important result of the study shows that the choice of system convenient purification to treat each effluent is determined by the inherent characteristics of each mining in particular, reporting in both cases a high removal efficiency of cyanide up to 95 % and toxic metals (Ni, Cu, As, Zn, Pb) which satisfies the maximum allowable concentrations required by applicable environmental standards shedding.
