Evaluation by electrochemical techniques of corrosion in commercial aluminum alloys
Main Article Content
Abstract
This work is based on the evaluation of the behavior against electrochemical corrosion of two aluminum alloys used in the manufacture of elements (pontoons or floaters) of fuel storage tanks with a floating internal membrane system, which are often located in industrial complexes near the sea and which may present problems of deterioration. Through the application of techniques of potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical noise, it is possible to analyze the effect of the time of immersion of the Al-3004 and Al-5052 alloys in synthetic seawater solution at different pH values, in order to provide information regarding the microstructure, the morphology of the bites and the participation of intermetallic particles in the process, thus facilitating the possibility of knowing the degree of resistance to corrosion. The results achieved in this investigation demonstrated that in both areas the type of localized corrosion is present and that in basic media the Al-5052 area is more prone to breakdown, which is attributed to its structure and chemical composition. In acidic media, both species present similar behavior, with the absence of a passive region and highly localized corrosion.
