SYNTHESIS OF ACTIVATED MAGNETIC CARBONS FROM COCONUT SHELL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Magnetic activated carbons (MACs) are materials having high efficiency for capturing molecules of interest present in dilute solutions. They are prepared by dispersing particles with magnetic properties onto the surface of activated carbon. By using an electromagnet, the composites are rapidly removed from the liquid stream, which competes advantageously with the filtration process.
Composite materials of the type [iron oxides/activated carbon], were synthesized. Activated carbon was obtained from coconut shell waste which simultaneously allows to obtain a high added value product from an industrial residue and gives a solution for its final destination. In order to obtain CAMs, different protocols of synthesis were carried out from coconut shell as starting material. Variation in the porous structure of the adsorbent due to the nestled iron oxides was analyzed. Magnetic phase properties (crystalline order by XRD, dispersion onto the carbonaceous matrix by EDS, and magnetization under a variable magnetic field), were evaluated.
