Abstract

Gold Barite plant located in the town of El Cobre in Santiago de Cuba province dedicated to gold production requires a stable source of water for the development of its operations. Among the variants analyzed by UEB is the use of water from the Mina Grande del Cobre quarry, this water needs to be treated as having a high copper content in its composition and the presence of this metal in the water to the leaching process gold increases the rate of cyanide consumption affecting metallurgical plant efficiency. For the treatment of water from the Great Copper Mine (Mina Grande del Cobre) it was used zeolite from San Andres reservoir both in its natural form as modified its sodium form and with two different size fractions
It was determined the maximum adsorption capacity of the zeolite for copper and its kinetics, resulting that more than 8hrs are required to reach its maximum adsorption capacity, which was in a range from 0.06 to 0.08 g Cu 100 g of zeolite and 5 stages needed to achieve adsorption values between 93 and 95% removal of copper. Sodium sulfide was also evaluated as copper precipitant. With this method of removal values 99% are achieved with a ratio of 3.21 g Na2S / g of Cu.
